Dr. John Toplu

Biography:

Dr. John Toplu is a Faculty Member at International Business University (IBU). He specializes in accounting and finance, auditing, forensic accounting, corporate restructuring, and insolvency processes.

With more than 25 years of combined academic and professional experience across Türkiye, the United Kingdom, and Canada, Dr. John Toplu brings a practitioner’s perspective to accounting education. His research examines forensic accounting, bankruptcy postponement and corporate recovery, and the role of emerging technologies such as robotic process automation in accounting. He is the author of a published book on the postponement of bankruptcy in Türkiye and the role of financial analysis in recovery projects. His recent co-authored work covers sustainability reporting and innovation in higher education.

At IBU, he teaches Business Planning in the MBA program. He is also a full-time professor at Seneca Polytechnic, where he teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, auditing, and fraud courses at the diploma, degree, and graduate levels. His teaching connects accounting principles with real-world business decisions, helping students build the analytical and critical-thinking skills needed for successful careers.

Academic and Professional Contributions:

Before moving into full-time teaching, Dr. John Toplu held senior roles in audit and forensic accounting. He led the Audit and Forensic Accounting department at Ecovis-Capital Audit and managed forensic accounting and fraud investigations at RSM International. He also served as a forensic accountant for trade court cases and coordinated compliance programs, including anti-money laundering policies. In Canada, he has worked with Deloitte and advises international clients entering the Canadian and U.S. markets.

In academia, he has contributed to curriculum development and to the Seneca Case Development Centre. He uses interactive, technology-enhanced tools to make learning engaging for diverse learners. His work reflects a commitment to practical, career-focused learning and to preparing students to contribute meaningfully to their organizations and communities.
