Dr. Thiago Da Silva Gomides

Biography:

Dr. Thiago Da Silva Gomides is a Faculty Member at International Business University (IBU). He specializes in artificial intelligence, machine learning, reinforcement learning, optimal control, and intelligent systems.

With more than 10 years of research experience in Brazil and Canada, Dr. Thiago Da Silva Gomides develops AI-driven methods to improve control and decision-making in complex, real-world systems. His research spans mobile edge and cloud computing, communication networks, and intelligent transportation systems, including autonomous truck platooning. His work combines rigorous analytical models with practical, scalable AI solutions that can be applied across industries.

He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Carleton University, designing AI and control-based decision frameworks for edge-cloud computing systems. He is also a Postdoctoral Researcher with Ericsson Canada, applying data-driven modelling and optimization to AI-enabled radio systems. His teaching connects core AI concepts with hands-on, problem-based learning and industry applications, and he encourages the responsible, transparent use of AI tools in student learning.

Academic and Professional Contributions:

Dr. Thiago Da Silva Gomides has published more than 25 peer-reviewed papers in leading venues, including IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Elsevier Computer Networks, and the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC). His master’s thesis received an Honourable Mention in the Thesis and Dissertation Contest of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems. He has also received the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) award, which supported his work as a Visiting Scholar at Brock University.

He has supported courses in wireless networks and security, distributed computing, social networking, and GIS at Carleton University. He has also co-supervised undergraduate and graduate research students, whose work earned a Best Paper Award and multiple Honourable Mentions. He serves as a peer reviewer for IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, and IEEE Latin America Transactions.
