Joanne Shoveller

Biography:

Joanne Shoveller served as IBU’s President and Vice-Chancellor from January 1, 2022, to December 31st, 2024. Prior to this role, she was the Vice President of Advancement at the University of Waterloo (2017–2021). Before that, she held progressive roles in Part-Time and Continuing Education, University Advancement, and the Ivey Business School at Western University. In 1997, she was assigned to Hong Kong as part of the small team that established Ivey’s Asian campus, including its Executive MBA, research, case-writing, and fundraising programs. In 2001, she played a pivotal role in the successful closure of the Ivey Campaign and subsequently assumed leadership of the Ivey MBA program until 2004, where she diversified and strengthened the student cohort and guided curriculum development.

Joanne led the advancement teams at the University of Guelph (2004–2012) and INSEAD Business School in France (2012–2016), building alumni, donor, and corporate relations, significantly increasing charitable giving, contributing to strategic direction, and launching two capital campaigns. A dedicated volunteer with organizations across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa, she brought a rich international perspective to her work, along with unique insights into the experiences of students, faculty, employers, and alumni. She holds a BA from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MBA from Ivey Business School, Western University.

During her time at IBU, Joanne focused on developing an exceptional, accessible, flexible, and personalized learning experience for a diverse student body. She prioritized building a strong academic foundation with faculty dedicated to enriching the teaching experience and establishing impactful partnerships with businesses and governments.
