Toronto, ON — In a distinguished recognition of her transformative leadership and unwavering commitment to community, Dr. Asima Vezina, President and Vice Chancellor of International Business University, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. The honour was presented by Member of Parliament Terry Sheehan for Dr. Vezina’s decades-long service to Canada through her work in advancing reconciliation, equity in education, and authentic community engagement.
The King Charles III Coronation Medal, administered by the Governor General of Canada, commemorates the coronation of His Majesty and is bestowed upon individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the country, their communities, and the Crown.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Vezina has been a national voice in advocating for equity in education for underrepresented groups, a strong ally for the truth telling work of the residential school survivors and in fostering partnerships locally, nationally and internationally grounded in respect, reciprocity, and reconciliation. Her leadership has helped redefine how institutions engage with Indigenous communities—not as stakeholders, but as partners, knowledge caretakers and stewards. She is a strong voice for community wellness, forging new ground in the higher education mental health and addictions research and training field.
“Receiving this medal is not a personal accolade, but a recognition of the work being done across the country to build lasting relationships with Indigenous peoples and to make Canada a welcoming and inclusive place for all people,” said Dr. Vezina. “I accept this honour on behalf of the communities, elders, students, and partners who continue to lead the path forward to a better Canada and I am grateful for all I have learned from those most impacted.”
This national honour not only celebrates her vision and dedication, but also highlights the collective responsibility of leaders, educators, and institutions to walk the path of reconciliation, equity and inclusivity with integrity and purpose.
